3. What is the difference between OT and IIP?
Paediatric Occupational Therapy (OT) at Redwood is a 50-minute session that focuses on understanding the child’s needs. The Occupational Therapist assesses the child’s strengths and challenges through professional assessment (standardised and non-standardised), identifies priorities and goals, and recommends appropriate strategies, and conducts therapeutic treatment.
Individualised Intervention Program (IIP) is a structured 1-hour programme designed to help the child practise and develop their individual skills through purposeful, consistent and meaningful activities. Our trained interventionist work with a 3-month developmental framework, focusing on the child’s developmental milestones and targeted skills with a progress tracking system in place.
4. How do our OT and IIP work together? 🫱🏻🫲🏼
They work together through this process:
ASSESS → IDENTIFY → PLAN → INTERVENE → MONITOR → ADJUST
The OT provides professional assessment and therapeutic direction, while the IIP provides structured and consistent opportunities for the child to practise and develop their individual goals using a 3 month developmental framework.
5. How does the 1-hour IIP programme work?
Each 1-hour IIP session is planned around your child’s individual developmental needs, milestones and goals. Activities are carefully selected to support the specific skills your child is currently working on.
🌱 The First 2 Introductory Sessions will focus on:
🔹Building the therapeutic relationship with the interventionist
🔹Establishing the program structure
🔹Easing the child into a comfortable level of support
🌿 Subsequent Intervention Sessions:
⏱️ The first 50 minutes of the session are dedicated to working directly with your child in the therapy room. Parents are not required to be in the room during this time, allowing the interventionist to work closely with the child and observe their responses and progress.
⏱️ The final 10 minutes are set aside for a brief parent update, where the interventionist will share what was worked on during the session, how your child responded, and areas that can be continued or supported at home.
🎯The IIP programme focuses on:
Specific targeted skills based on your child’s needs
Purposeful and meaningful activities that support learning and development
Consistent practice and repetition to build confidence and skills
Individualised goals based on your child’s developmental needs
Ongoing progress monitoring to track your child’s development and adjust goals when needed
6. Does my child need IIP if they are already receiving OT?
Not necessarily. Every child has different needs. Some children may make good progress with regular OT sessions and appropriate support at home or school.
However, IIP may be helpful for children who need:
• More opportunities to practise
• Consistent and repeated support
• Support for multiple developmental goals
• Help applying skills in everyday routines
• Ongoing monitoring of progress
The important question is not whether a child needs OT or IIP, but rather:
“What type and level of support does my child need to make meaningful progress?”
